Indian Army's new elite unit

The Indian Army has taken a significant step towards enhancing its preparedness for future conflicts by launching the "Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group" (STEAG), which represents the creation of an innovative specialized technology unit.

The former 21 Signals Group has been rebranded as STEAG, which will function as an advanced technology division focused on exploring and evaluating state-of-the-art communication technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, 6G, machine learning, and quantum technologies, specifically for defense applications.

This advanced unit will engage in technical reconnaissance, assessment, development, and management of critical information and communication technology (ICT) solutions, while also providing user interface support through the upkeep and enhancement of current modern technologies.

Reports indicate that STEAG will operate under a new mandate with an estimated personnel strength of approximately 280.

Modernization of the Indian Armed Forces:

The formation of STEAG reflects the Indian armed forces' recognition of the imperative to develop advanced combat capabilities for the future. This initiative aligns with the Army's 2023 decision to establish command cyber operations and support wings (CCOSW) focused on cyber warfare, underscoring their commitment to maintaining a competitive advantage in the rapidly changing technological landscape of contemporary warfare.
