On 14 October 2025, Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) held a formal launch ceremony today at its Kobe shipyard for the new Taigei-class attack submarine, JS Sōgei (SS-518) — the sixth unit in Japan’s modern diesel-electric submarine program.
The vessel, which marks the 32nd submarine built at the Kobe yard since World War II, is intended for service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). During the launch event, officials from Japan’s Ministry of Defense and KHI attended as the submarine was floated out from the No.1 Building Berth.
Design, Capabilities, and Features
JS Sōgei shares the design lineage of the preceding Taigei-class boats, but incorporates several enhancements aimed at operational endurance, stealth, and crew versatility.
The submarine features a high-strength steel pressure hull engineered for deeper submersion and increased structural resilience. It is powered by two Kawasaki 12V 25/31 diesel engines paired with a single electric motor for submerged propulsion. Ot top of it, JS Sōgei is fitted with lithium-ion battery systems, which boost underwater endurance relative to older lead-acid technology.

Automated systems, advanced sonar arrays, and enhanced surveillance sensors improve the submarine’s detection and tactical awareness capabilities. The boat also includes facilities to accommodate female crew members, a design feature increasingly standard across Japan’s new submarine fleet.
In terms of size and performance parameters: Sōgei measures 84.0 m in length, with a beam of 9.1 m and draft of 10.4 m, displacing approximately 3,000 tons. Its standard complement is around 70 personnel.
Timeline to Service
The submarine’s keel was laid down on March 28, 2023, and it was officially launched on October 14, 2025. Following outfitting, sea trials, and final tests, JS Sōgei is expected to be commissioned in March 2027.
Strategic Context and Implications
The launch of Sōgei reinforces the JMSDF’s steady expansion of its Taigei-class submarine fleet, aimed at enhancing deterrence, surveillance, and undersea capabilities in an increasingly contested Indo-Pacific region.
Analysts note that, compared with previous Japanese diesel-electric submarines, the Taigei class targets a balance between underwater endurance and rapid maneuvering, leveraging lithium-ion batteries and more powerful engines to reduce exposure during snorkeling and battery recharge cycles.
JS Sōgei’s entry is also symbolic: the name “Sōgei” (蒼鯨) means “blue whale” in Japanese, and it is the first JMSDF vessel to bear that name.
As regional maritime tensions grow, each additional submarine — especially among Japan’s most advanced — enhances undersea deterrence and supports Japan’s evolving role in joint security and defense cooperation across the Pacific theatre.
