The Assessment

The Indian Navy and Indian Air Force rescued the Iranian dhow Azini on 2 November 2026. It was freed four days after Somali pirates seized it, and closed off its use as a mothership before any attack from it was reported.

  1. The force mix strategy of a Kolkata-class destroyer, P-8I, Sea Guardian drone and an IAF C-17 airdrop of MARCOS mirrors the March 2024 MV Ruen The signal is repeatability at long range.
  2. Early warning drove the timeline (moderate). The EU-backed MSCIO flagged the hijack on 31 October and warned of mothership use. India's reported 48-hour operation ran inside that window.
  3. The resurgence has a naval-distraction component (moderate). According to EU naval force and several analysts this may be tied to the US–Israel war on Iran. US disputes a direct link.
  4. Strategic dividend for India (moderate). The Indian operation is regarded as a legally clean operation, praised by Tehran.  This also supports the Navy's "first responder" claim at a time when New Delhi has been juggling to maintain relations with Washington and Tehran.
  5. There are gaps reported with regards to the precise number of the crew count, distance from Mumbai, the fate of the pirates and the exact role of the airdrop. This is due to the inconsistent or unstated information reported or left out by the sources.

The Verified timeline

It is confirmed that the Hijack to release took four days, from Thursday 29 October to Monday 2 November 2026 and importantly, the Indian operation itself is reported at 48 hours.

Armed men board Azini at about 09°42'N 053°55'E, approximately 185 nm east of Bandarbayla, in the stretch between Bandarbayla and Hafun off Puntland (MSCIO, as relayed by Hiiraan). Puntland maritime police say 12 boarded. officials cited by AFP say 8 boarded first and 4 joined later. The captain sends a distress voice message to another vessel before contact is broken.

The commencement of the Indian operation is undisclosed. On basis of available information, counting back 48 hours from 2 November, it would be assumed that it is around 31 October, which matches the MSCIO alert.

The mission has proved India’s organic, high-readiness capability to execute complex joint-service operations at extreme ranges, cementing its role as the preferred net security partner in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Executing missions strictly around anti-piracy and humanitarian assistance has strengthened the bilateral ties between India and Iran without risking secondary sanctions or breaking consensus with Western allies.

Forces employed

The Indian Navy's own account describes a layered sequence: find, fix, contain, then board. Surveillance did the finding and tracking and the airdrop supplied the boarding force.

Element

Role reported

INS Kolkata (Kolkata-class destroyer)

Tasked to intervene.

P-8I maritime patrol aircraft

Located the dhow and tracked its movements.

Sea Guardian drone

Consistent surveillance and monitoring of the dhow.

IAF C-17 Globemaster

Precision airdrop of MARCOS over open water.

MARCOS (Marine Commandos)

Boarded and secured the vessel.

MSCIO and EU Operation Atalanta

Issued the public alert and later recorded the liberation. But failed to describe as tasked by India.

According to reports, INS Kolkata was at sea in the north Arabian Sea on 15 September, when India says PNS Hunain collided with her during a routine deployment. If that is the same deployment as the Azini tasking, she had been at sea about seven weeks.

Official messaging. A 29-second MyGov explainer, from the Government of India's citizen-engagement platform, runs on captions: a 48-hour operation to secure Azini with a warship and surveillance aircraft tracking its movements. This followed by Marine Commandos (MARCOS) joining through an airdrop and then the pirate threat neutralized. All 20 crew are reported safe with zero casualties. Its images show commandos on the dhow's deck, crew holding Indian and Iranian flags together, seated men in front of the commandos, and a spread of seized weapons.

Contested and unreconciled points

Six points in the public record conflict or are unstated. Until the Navy publishes a fuller account, the safest working line is the official one with the gaps named.

Point

What sources say

Assessment

Crew count

MoD and Navy: all 20 crew rescued. Puntland police, via AP and AFP stated that 21 Iranian fishermen plus 2 Somali security guards aboard at the hijack, 23 in total.

Unreconciled. Three people are unaccounted for in open reporting. With the available information 20 may be recorded as the official rescued figure.

Number and fate of pirates

12 have been reported as per Puntland police and Windward. Sentinel Assam says 12 were "neutralized" and a weapons cache seized.

Count of 12 is well supported. The MyGov video says the Navy "neutralized the pirate threat" over images of seized weapons and seated men under commando guard.

Role of the airdrop

MARCOS were deployed by precision airdrop. Baird Maritime says the drop provided reinforcements for the Marine Commandos.

The MyGov caption that Marine Commandos "joined the mission through an airdrop" also reads as reinforcement, which implies an element may already have been embarked. Boats are not mentioned in the retrieved Navy text. In 2024 the Ruen drop did include two boats.

Distance from Mumbai

MoD: more than 3,000 km. Last reported dhow positions are about 2,100 to 2,300 km from Mumbai.

Rescue coordinates are unpublished. The figure may be rounded, or measure a sailed track. It cannot be checked from open sources.

Day of hijack

Maritime Executive says Friday. MSCIO, Mehr and Baird say Thursday 29 October.

Thursday 29 October.

Boarding position

Puntland police: between Bandarbayla and Hafun. Hiiraan and Windward: about 185 nm east of Bandarbayla.

Not contradictory as the coordinates and the Bandarbayla–Hafun area describe the same offshore stretch. The only open question is whether the fix marks the boarding (MSCIO via Hiiraan) or a later position (Inside Somalia).

Threat picture: the mothership model and the 2026 resurgence

Azini fits the profile that maritime security centers have tracked all year: a Pirate Action Group seizes a dhow or fishing vessel and tried to utilize it as a mobile base to reach merchant ships beyond skiff range. MSCIO said the vessel matched that profile and had moved toward a commercial lane by 31 October. There is no record or report stating any attack launched from Azini .

Pattern in 2026.

  • Late March: the Iranian dhow Alwaseemi 786 was hijacked at about 400 nm east of Mogadishu. Operation Atalanta located and isolated it, and pirates abandoned it in April .
  • Late April: the Emirati dhow Fahad-4 was also used as a mothership and abandoned on 4 May after the supplies ran short and ships stayed alert.
  • By early May the JMIC rated the threat severe, with three merchant vessels held and the 25th recorded incident of the year logged.
  • By late October the JMIC had the Somali Basin at moderate, indicating that the southwest monsoon ended on 15 October and made farther offshore skiff operations viable again.
  • Late August: Turkish and Somali forces retook the cargo ship MV Latuf. Somalia's Defence Ministry says 14 pirates were killed and four boats destroyed.
  • Late September: Puntland forces retook the tanker Honour 25 after about five months. Puntland maritime police say five crew were killed before the rescue. Captured suspects were about 16.

Competing explanations for the resurgence of hijackings.

These are attributed claims, not settled fact.

  • EU naval force and analysts quoted by Al Jazeera and Bloomberg link it to the US–Israel war on Iran.
  • The Trump administration rejects a direct link and says US naval forces can still protect shipping.
  • The Institute for Security Studies stresses seasonality state that attacks fall in the winter monsoon and rise as seas calm.

It can be inferred that the war has lowered deterrence, while the monsoon calendar set the timing of the Azini seizure.

Operational assessment: the Ruen template, 2.5 years on

The Azini operation is similar to the 2024 MV Ruen formula at smaller scale and faster tempo. The harder questions are about what it reveals regarding limits, not capability.
