Ceasefire between Thailand and Conflict after the deadly border clash

Malaysia, July 28, 2025 – A tentative ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, brokered in Malaysia, is currently in effect following a deadly border clash that claimed 43 lives and displaced over 300,000 people. Despite the agreement, tensions remain high as Thailand’s acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, has accused Cambodian troops of violating the ceasefire, a claim vehemently denied by Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha.

28 July 2025, Military commander from  Thailand and Cambodia conceded to a ceasefire and discussed measures to maintain the peace. The meeting took place in Malaysia where Thai and Cambodian leaders agreed to a ceasefire. Around 43 people were killed in the conflict with over 300,000 individuals displaced in both countries. Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has accused Cambodian troops of violating the ceasefire on Tuesday and has flagged in complaints to Malaysia, the United States and China. In response to Thai accusations, Cambodia has denied the claims. The Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha, has stated that the Cambodian troops had strictly abided by the ceasefire since midnight and continued to uphold it. According to several reports, both nations are expected a team of four to resolve any problems, Winthai told reporters.
Further talks on the matter are expected to continue at a meeting of the General Border Committee on 4 August 2025 in Cambodia. The committee comprises of the defence ministers and high ranking military commanders from both nations. The Thai army is said to have detained 18 Cambodian soldiers and were provided with provisions such as food and water. On basis of the peace agreement, the militaries of both nations have agreed to not to dispatch additional  troops along the disputed border. Malaysia’s Defence Chief General Mohd Nizam Jaffar led a delegation to Thailand and Cambodia on Tuesday. A Chinese military spokesman said Beijing will closely monitor the communication with both countries. The Malaysian Premier Anwar Ibrahim and U.S. President Donald Trump pushed for the peace talks between the two nations after Trump warned the two nations regarding the desisting of trade negotiations. US had already imposed a tariff of 36% on both Thai and Cambodian goods in the U.S. Both nations are expected to negotiate with the US in these regards as US is one if their big markets. According to Pichai Chunhavajira, Thailand’s finance minister, the trade talks with Washington were expected to be concluded before 1 August 2025. The initial damage from the border conflict, Thailand has estimated the damage to be more than 10 billion baht ($300 million). Hence the Thai government is reportedly prepping a budget of at least 25 billion baht. The Thai government is taking several relief measures to aid those affected in the conflict which also includes soft loans, loan repayment deferrals and tax breaks.
